Balancing Priorities: Why We Can't Afford Tunnel Vision on Climate Change

Image
As a conservative, it's natural for concern regarding the resources of our planet.  The narrow discussion around environmental issues focusing on climate change loses focus on other pressing issues.  Systems theory highlights that one input to a system cannot be discounted nor solely blamed on an outcome....but the media hyper focus on emissions loses sight of other pressing environmental challenges that have profound impacts on the health of our ecosystems and communities.  The current scale and pace of environmental degradation is truly unprecedented - and much of it has nothing to do with greenhouse gas emissions despite the political landscape. Plastics & Toxins      Take the issue of plastic pollution, for instance. Our oceans are now awash with trillions of pieces of microplastic. These tiny plastic particles find their way into the food chain, with untold consequences for marine life and human health.  When was the last time you walked the s...

Balance in the Scales of Justice - Does Recidivism Equal a Failed System?

Image
It is no secret that Progressive politicians like Senator Sanders and Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George portray our nation's criminal justice system as "broken." The thing of it is, our United States developed a comprehensive system of laws and correction practices to protect public safety and uphold justice. While no system is perfect, our current model plays an important role.      Critics point to high rates of recidivism as evidence of failure. However, the fact that many offenders reoffend does not necessarily mean the system itself is to blame. Little doubt regarding complex societal factors contribute a large share to criminal behavior.  We as a society should definitely consider the substantial costs of incarceration AND the greater costs of crime to communities overall.      While progressives point to high recidivism rates as evidence of a failed justice system, we cannot place the onus solely on society...

Navigating Education Budget Challenges: Act 60, Taxpayer Trust, and Continuous Improvement

Image
Vermont’s Act 60, passed in 1997, sought to make education funding more equitable across school districts through a statewide property tax system. Over 75% of school budgets now come from local property taxes. While well-intentioned, implementation of Act 60 funding formulas cultivates a temporal disconnect: towns and school boards can vote to increase spending without constituents feeling immediate tax consequences. This accountability gap has precipitated year-over-year increases in education budgets often exceeding inflation and economic growth, despite steady decreases in student populations. The unfortunate budget Vote-to-Tax gap fosters a unique dynamic: Taxpayers rarely trace rising tax burdens directly back to specific prior-year school budget decisions. This reduces voter agency and perceived value from their tax dollars. School boards experience psychological distance from tax implications their budget votes ultimately trigger . This can promote over...

Understanding and Open Discourse

Image
Scan today's media landscape - whether TV or social feeds - and one encounters little more than reductive extremes . Each issue boiled down to a good versus evil binary. "Right" perspectives glorified. "Wrong" ones vilified. No complexity granted. No nuance allowed. No space given for thoughtful disagreement in good faith.      Lost amidst this choreography lies any real truth-seeking . Instead, assumptions reign on all sides regarding others' supposed malicious motivations. Facts get discarded if inconvenient. Complex problems facing society cannot be solved through such entrenched positional grandstanding. Progress on pressing issues often stalls.      What if an alternate approach emerged across divided issues like inequality, policing, healthcare or foreign policy? A path embracing inconvenient truths proves necessary before sustainable solutions manifest . This demands questioning easy assumptions and allowing space to valida...

Balancing Climate Goals and Energy Affordability: Lessons for Vermont

Image
The recent United Nations climate conference in Dubai called for transitioning away from fossil fuels globally. However, the best approach remains debated - restrict supplies or incentivize clean alternatives? Vermont leaders must find balanced paths to reduce emissions without undue public burden.      Some advocate supply restrictions through government edicts to choke fossil fuel output, risking price spikes if alternatives aren't readily available. However, relying solely on voluntary consumer shifts enabled by better technology may not meet popular targets.      The Biden EPA proposed requiring all US coal and gas plants to adopt unproven zero-carbon technologies by 2035 or shut down. Another rule would mandate 62% of car sales be electric by 2032.      While well-intentioned, such sweeping federal regulations could mean soaring American energy bills and economic disruption unless affordable substitutes ar...

Developing Policy - Complexities Complement, not Cancel balanced Decision-Making

Image
When values, rights, and interests collide, how should we determine which perspectives or groups should prevail?  How can we evaluate and explore complex issues when legitimate concerns on multiple sides are difficult to reconcile?  Whose "rights" are more important?  To analyze such challenging cases, it is essential to utilize principled processes and frameworks for ethical, evidence-based balance.      The following principles for balanced decision-making could guide evaluations of complex societal issues: Harm Principle – Any restriction of individual freedom should be few and limited to prevent significant harm to others.  The bar for justifying interventions based on claiming potential harm must be high.  Think of it in terms of "risk analysis", looking at the likely outcomes and mitigation for catastrophic results if needed. Proportionality – Limits should be proportionate responses, narrowly tailored to address the ...

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974: How Conservative Thought Championed Women's Economic Empowerment

Image
Critics frequently characterize conservatism as inherently opposed to women’s rights, but the 1974 Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) shows conservative principles support  the rights and freedoms for women. This legislation, passed with bipartisan support & signed by President Gerald Ford, prohibited lending discrimination based on gender. It advanced women’s economic independence by enabling access to credit and ownership. The Principles Work:      While select individuals resisted due to inertia or traditional gender views, core constitutional principles provided the moral foundation for this reform:      Equal Protection – The 14th Amendment guarantees equal protection. Discriminatory lending violated this right. The ECOA restored equal protection for women seeking credit.      Due Process – Biased lending infringed the 5th/14th Amendment due process rights of women to fair and equitable treatment. The ECOA...

Loss of Balance - Senate

The 17th Amendment, ratified in 1913, fundamentally altered the way U.S. Senators are chosen, leading to significant changes in the balance of power between the states and the federal government. Before the 17th Amendment, Senators were appointed by state legislatures, but it introduced direct popular election of Senators.       The first proposal to amend the Constitution to elect senators by popular vote was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1826, but the idea did not gain considerable support until the late 19th century when several problems related to Senate elections had become evident. In some cases, state legislatures deadlocked over the election of senators, leading to Senate vacancies lasting months and even years. In other cases, political machines gained control over state legislatures, and the Senators elected with their support were dismissed as puppets.  While it aimed to enhance democratic representation...

Unsettled Science

"Unsettled" by Stephen Koonin is a thought-provoking and timely book that delves into the complexities of climate change and its broader impact on society. Koonin, a renowned physicist and former top Department of Energy official, challenges the prevailing narrative surrounding climate change, offering a fresh perspective backed by scientific evidence and rigorous analysis.      In "Unsettled," Koonin confronts the commonly held assumptions and alarmist claims about global warming. He argues that while climate change is indeed occurring, the current discourse often exaggerates the severity and certainty of its consequences. Drawing on extensive research and data, Koonin presents a nuanced view of climate science, encouraging readers to critically assess the available information rather than succumbing to fear-driven narratives.      The book tackles a range of climate-related topics, such as extreme weather events, rising sea leve...

Deserve to be heard?

In a society that values democracy, diversity, and inclusivity, no single voice should be inherently louder than others. In a democratic setting, the ideal is to create an environment where all perspectives, opinions, and concerns are given a fair platform and considered with equal weight.      It is essential to recognize that each person brings unique experiences, insights, and expertise to the table. Listening to a diverse range of voices enriches discussions, encourages critical thinking, and leads to better decision-making.      In certain situations, such as in matters of justice, equality, and human rights, marginalized voices that have historically been silenced or underrepresented might require more attention to address imbalances and promote fairness.  A marginalized voice refers to a perspective, opinion, or identity that is systematically underrepresented, ignored, or suppressed. Marginalization occurs when c...

Authority vs Individualism, with accountable governance

How do we balance authority and Individualism?       Teachings about respecting authority address the importance of social order and cooperation, providing guidance on how individuals can navigate complex societal structures and foster relationships. Respecting authority helps maintain stability and promotes a sense of community, enabling people to work together towards common goals.      These tenets retain relevance in modern times because they emphasize fundamental principles that transcend specific religious or cultural contexts. Regardless of one's beliefs, respecting authority contributes to the smooth functioning of societies and institutions. It serves as a reminder to approach those in positions of authority with civility and to recognize the roles they play in maintaining order.  The U.S. Constitution provides a balance by codifying government working for the governed, contrary to most philosophies at the time.      The co...

George Orwell's Prophetic Gaze: Comparing Today's Media Landscape with Orwellian Writings

George Orwell, the renowned author and social critic, is widely celebrated for his penetrating insights into the dangers of authoritarianism and the manipulation of truth. His works, particularly "1984" and "Animal Farm," continue to resonate today, serving as a lens through which we can examine the state of the modern media landscape. In this article, we will explore the parallels between Orwell's writings and contemporary media, shedding light on the challenges we face in an era of information overload, propaganda, and surveillance. I. Manipulation of Information: Orwell's "1984" warned of a totalitarian regime that controlled and manipulated information to maintain its power. Similarly, today's media landscape is susceptible to biases, selective reporting, and sensationalism. The rise of social media platforms and echo chambers can contribute to the spread of misinformation, making it difficult for individuals to discern truth from falsehood...

"Toxic Charity" by Robert Lupton. Does it apply today?

Image
"Toxic Charity", a captivating book written by Robert Lupton, dives deep into the world of charitable giving, revealing the unintended consequences that often arise from well-meaning acts of compassion. Lupton draws from his extensive experience working with marginalized communities, offering a critical analysis of traditional charity models and proposing alternative strategies for fostering meaningful and sustainable community development.       This book serves as a wake-up call for anyone seeking to help, urging us to reevaluate our approach to giving and question the long-term impact of our actions. Lupton challenges the idea that charity always brings about positive change, highlighting how certain forms of aid can inadvertently perpetuate dependency and hinder individuals from breaking free from poverty's grip.      Lupton emphasizes the importance of empowering local communities and forging authentic relationships with those we seek to help. He encou...

Exploring the Parallels: The Handmaid's Tale and Socialism

Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel, "The Handmaid's Tale," paints a chilling picture of a totalitarian society where women's rights are stripped away, and a theocratic regime controls every aspect of citizens' lives. While the story is set in a religious fundamentalist state, it also offers thought-provoking insights into the dangers of totalitarianism. In this article, we will examine the world of "The Handmaid's Tale" and compare it with the principles of socialism. By doing so, we hope to shed light on the potential risks associated with extreme political ideologies. The Power Dynamics: "The Handmaid's Tale" portrays a society where a select few hold immense power, while the majority are subjected to oppression and subjugation. Similarly, in extreme forms of socialism, power is often centralized in the hands of the state or a ruling party. The danger lies in the potential for this concentration of power to result in authoritarian ...

The Power of Distraction

As most of you know, Gov Scott allowed H.230, "An act relating to implementing mechanisms to reduce suicide", to become law without his signature.  Gov Scott highlighted beliefs that the Judicial Branch will decide this act's fate.      While cloaked under suicide prevention, the bill, which originated from the Health Care Committee, primary focused on firearms.  According to the recently released  2020 Vital Statistics Bulletin , suicide increased from 16.3 deaths per 100,000 residents (1979-1981) to 18.8 deaths per 100,000 residents....roughly increasing from 102 in 1980 to 117 in 2020.  The legislature believes that restricting firearms sales and ownership will reduce suicide and homicide.   Reducing Vermont's suicide totals is undoubtedly crucial, but it's worth considering larger health risks to Vermonters.       Heart disease (#1 with 1,591 deaths) and cancer ((#2 with 1,399 deaths) consist...
